"When I’ve been asked to record podcasts in the past, I’ve always found it a little boring to simply put together a mix that could just as easily work in a live setting at an event. Instead, I’ve usually chosen between one of two concepts: either making a bold statement by presenting a particular musical theme in the most entertaining way possible, or creating a journey that is designed to evoke a certain mood.
Over the past few years, Indie Dance and Dark Disco have become two of the core genres in my DJ sets, although my relationship with Indie Dance is somewhat ambivalent. I instantly fell in love with it when the genre began to take shape around a decade ago. It felt fresh and exciting, with its dark, tech disco-infused vibe, funky grooves, acid-tinged elements, and a sound that worked well on smaller dancefloors.
But, as with every genre that gains popularity, Indie Dance has gradually developed its own big-room formulas. These days, there’s an endless stream of releases that leave me cold — tracks that feel too generic, too gimmicky, and too far removed from what originally drew me to the sound.
Lacking enough freshly released tracks from both genres to tell an exciting musical story that can work as a listening experience in its own right, I decided to take a different approach. I selected 25 tracks spanning almost a decade to create a coherent journey and build up.
The common thread running through the mix is a combination of heavy, subby, bouncing basslines, dark and acid-infused disco vibes, and funky vocals. It balances timeless Dark Disco and Indie Dance tracks with more contemporary ones that could be filed under the Maccabi House sound."
